Which TEFL Course?
Which is the best TEFL Course?
Thinking about enrolling in an accredited TEFL course? Great, it’s a tremendous opportunity to get a job, travel the world and do a whole host of things you’d probably never do in the UK. But which TEFl course is the best? And why are there so many different ones? How do you choose which one to spend your money (and time) on?
There is an almost unlimited number and variety of TEFL, and TEFL style courses available now. The TEFL industry (yes, it’s an industry just like any other) has been booming for decades driven by the increasing demand for English language learning globally. Like any commercial sector there are the stars and the wannabes, and the ones you want to steer clear of!
If you want the best, then consider either the Cambridge CELTA or Trinity CertTESOL. Both of these course are accredited by serious educational instituitions and have worldwide recognition as quality entry level teaching qualifications.
The British Council are one of the biggest providers of CELTA courses ... here are some other people talking about their experience with CELTA.
But the fact remains that if you want a serious entry-level qualification for Teaching English as a Foreign Language, and one that employers outside the UK will recognize, then stick to the CELTA or Trinity CertTESOL and you won’t go wrong.
If you decide to go further in your TEFL career then there are a host of dimploma, degree and masters degree options, both residential and online, you might want to consider.
Like most industries, the better qualified and more exprienced you are the higher you can go and get access to the best long term career opportunities in management, teacher training and other areas.

What is CELTA?
The CELTA (Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults) has Cambridge English Language Assessment, a division of Cambridge University behind it, so you can be pretty sure it’s the real thing. Researched, designed and developed to give you the core knowledge and skills to make you effective in the classroom as a language teacher. It’s accredited through Ofqual (Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation) in the UK as a level 5 certificate. The British Council are one of the biggest providers of CELTA courses ... here are some other people talking about their experience with CELTA.
What is Trinity CertTESOL?
The Trinity CertTESOL (certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) is backed by Trinity College ondon. Based on the UK QCF (Qualifications Credit Framework) system it’s a level 5 certificate, equivalent to the second year of an undergraduate degree course in terms of difficulty. So what about the rest of the TEFL courses?
The truth is, there are many copies and many more which are loosely based on the above two. There are introductory TEFL courses, weekend TEFL courses and online TEFL courses all added into the mix.But the fact remains that if you want a serious entry-level qualification for Teaching English as a Foreign Language, and one that employers outside the UK will recognize, then stick to the CELTA or Trinity CertTESOL and you won’t go wrong.

Why become a TEFL teacher?
TEFL - the greatest job in the world?
There are many reasons to why you might consider TEFL as an option. Many people become a TEFL teacher for just a year or two to travel and see the world while earning some money. Maybe you simply can’t find a job at home at the moment, or you want to do something before settling into your chosen career. Whatever the reason, the decision to become a TEFL teacher could be one of the best things you do with your life.
TEFL could well be considered the perfect global job nowadays. The skills you learn are easily transportable from country to country and there are almost no limitations as to where you can find work, even in English speaking countries. There are few job opportunities that offer such flexibility as TEFL in terms of working schedules and also conditions. You can choose to work part-time, full-time, with a large organization or a small one. Some TEFL teachers once they get a bit of experience branch out on their own, so working as a TEFL teacher offers the full array of possibilities depending on what you are looking for.
It has also been the catalyst for many to simply get out of their own country for a while and even if they decided that TEFL was not the career of a lifetime, they have found a more interesting life in a far away land, fallen in love and gotten married, opened bars, restaurants, hostels and hotels and even gone to work with multinational companies in the country where they were teaching, all of which would probably never of happened if they hadn’t taken the decision to become a TEFL teacher.
Whatever your initial motivation might be, if you do decide to become a TEFL teacher you will be joining a band of people who, maybe unlike any other, have travelled the world, had adventures, changed the lives of others and maybe even found a new life for themselves.
Become a TEFL teacher – it’s easy
Becoming a TEFL teacher is relatively simple. There are numerous short and intensive TEFL courses which can certify you as a TEFL teacher and enable you to find your first job. While some courses may be better than others, the fact remains that there are few entry barriers to becoming a fully fledged TEFL teacher and as some have said, it really is a passport to the world.TEFL could well be considered the perfect global job nowadays. TEFL – as serious as you want it to be
Being a TEFL teacher can seem like the greatest job in the world sometimes. As a TEFL teacher you get to travel, meet lots of different people, have an instant social life in a foreign country thanks to your curious students, and the opportunity to learn a new language and experience a different culture. Like many jobs, what you get out of it is directly related to what you put in. TEFL teachers like many other workers have their lifecycle of initial enthusiasm, being able to do it with their eyes closed and then eventual stagnation once they’ve been at it for a long time. Some do it for a year or two and then get out and do something else while others find themselves staying with TEFL for a lot longer and developing a career which can take them all over the world and offers all the usual professional development and salary rewards in the long term.Become a TEFL teacher and change lives
As in most careers, those who look for the opportunities and take them can develop a serious career based on TEFL and what may start out as a jaunt to see the world while teaching English has ended up for some as a lifetime commitment and seen them move into areas such as academic management, language assessment, teacher training, academic research and authoring and creating teaching materials.
